Frank has always been the “scaredy cat” of the family. He tries, but he’s often nervous. Still, he loves his walks.

One day, when Orange was still a threat to our cats, Frank encountered him in a conservation area behind our home. I was with Linda on the deck when we both heard a loud scream. It wasn’t Frank’s typical meow—it sounded different. It carried real fear.

I knew Frank was in trouble, and so did Linda.

I raced downstairs, but Linda took a quicker path. She knew her brother was in danger and didn’t waste a second. Without hesitation, she jumped from the deck—about 12 feet high.

By the time I reached the spot where the meow came from, Linda was already there, perched on a fallen tree with the most threatening look I’ve ever seen from her. She stared down Orange, who immediately lowered himself and backed off.

In that moment, I knew Linda would sacrifice herself to protect Frank.

It makes me wonder—how many times do we truly step up to protect those we care about? We often say, “I’ll protect my children,” and that’s natural and important. But what about the rest of our family? Would we defend a sibling who’s vulnerable? Would we stand up for a cousin, a close friend, or even a neighbor in need?

Linda’s instinct isn’t limited to just one cat or one individual. She sees the whole colony as her family—each one deserving of protection and care. That kind of loyalty is a powerful reminder that family can be broader than blood ties. It’s about community, trust, and standing together against threats, no matter how big or small.

In our own lives, sometimes we hesitate. We weigh risks, avoid confrontation, or hope someone else will step in. But protecting those we love often requires courage and sacrifice—just like Linda’s leap from that deck. It calls us to be brave not only for ourselves but for others who depend on us.
