Garfield

For almost thirteen years, Garfield was the king of the house.

He arrived on December 28, 2008, and from that day forward, life was never quite the same. He became the inspiration behind Life Lessons from My Cats, the heart of Nine Lives, and one of the greatest teachers I have ever known.

But Garfield was much more than the cat who inspired a website and a book.

He was my friend.

Garfield believed that life was meant to be shared. He hated being alone and wanted the people he loved nearby. He wanted company while he ate, someone beside him while he slept, and familiar faces throughout the day. Wherever I was, Garfield was usually not far away.

For most of our lives together, he slept on my left side. That spot belonged to him and no one else.

He was loyal in ways that are difficult to describe unless you have experienced it yourself. Every day he waited for me at the door when I came home. He followed me from room to room, sat beside me during quiet moments, and somehow always seemed to know when companionship was needed most.

Garfield also carried himself with quiet confidence. He ruled the household without demanding attention. The other cats respected him, and many of them looked to him for guidance. None more than Linda, who followed him everywhere and trusted him from the very beginning.

As Garfield grew older, his role began to change. The leader became the one who needed help. And when that time came, the cats he had spent years caring for returned that love to him. Linda rarely left his side, guiding and protecting him during the final chapter of his life.

Even in his last days, Garfield continued teaching.

He taught me about loyalty.

He taught me about friendship.

He taught me about unconditional love.

And in the end, he taught me the hardest lesson of all: sometimes love means letting go.

Garfield's greatest gift was showing me that devotion is not measured by grand gestures. It is found in the small moments—the daily routines, the quiet companionship, and simply being there for someone year after year.

His lesson remains with me every day:

The greatest relationships are not built on words. They are built on showing up, again and again, for the people you love.
